Crosslocke is a variant of the Nuzlocke Challenge, in which there's more emphasis on forming attachments to team members and artist interpretation, as opposed to the modern focus of Nuzlockes being on competitive gameplay and strategy.
Not just being a crossover prompt between a Pokémon nuzlocke run and media of the player's choice, this variant can also be considered a "full circle" homage to the first Nuzlocke comic, in which the encounters were named after pop culture characters or actors (especially the titular Nuzlocke, a Nuzleaf resembling the fictional character John Locke from Lost).
Challenge Rules:
- Encounters: Only the first encounter of a route can be captured. For open-world games, use a randomizer to determine what Pokémon the encounters should be.
- If the first encounter flees or faints, another encounter cannot be captured.
- Dying: If a Pokémon faints, it's considered dead and must be permanently boxed.
- Nicknaming: All captures must be nicknamed for attachment and based on a theme of one's choice for the run, bringing in the "crossover" element of Crosslocke!
- Nicknames must be appropriate for what they’re referencing (eg Koby fits Lechonk as they have pink colors, are the first encounter, and are “Normal”).
Additional Rules in Miralyk's Runs
- Dupes Clause: Encounters of an already captured evolution line (even if dead) can be skipped to try catching a unique species.
- Shiny and Legendary encounters nullify the “first encounter” (and dupes clause) restriction.
- Active Pokémon in the team must not share the same Primary (first) Type.
- Exceptions can be HM users needed for mandatory progression, but must not be used in battle.
- A team wipeout does not mean the challenge is a failure if there are still Pokémon alive in the PC. The run is a failure only when everyone is dead or if the player chooses to forfeit.
- Affection/Friendship-boosting items and interactions are allowed, if not encouraged, in order to strengthen attachment to team members!
By having cool characters be the team members (eg One Piece's Monster Trio as the Paldean starters), artistic license such as gijinka designs, drawing group dynamics, personal twists to the story, etc, are highly encouraged. This is the main draw of the Crosslocke challenge, as it's a Nuzlocke tailored more for a personal, customizable experience of silly AU-crafting (also akin to DND given the creativity possible from working with factors outside the player/artist's control), primarily in gameplay and artistic interpretation to have fun drawing or talking about!
