Headcanons

As Murphy's one of the more overlooked Silent Hill protagonists and even with his canon lore, there's a lot of mistakes and vagueness due to writing errors regardless, here's some of headcanons and AUs I have for him...!

  • The cupcake flavor that's most associated with Murphy would be chocolate, specifically coffee chocolate. While it's also another similarity to joke about with Henry, who's associated with chocolate milk in the fanbase as a meme, it just felt fitting regardless because of the color coordination and rich flavor fitting Murphy!
    • (Also, when I was talking about getting a cupcake to jokingly celebrate the anniversary of my Murphy's Law curse, Tomm Hulett coincidentally had the same idea when he suggested coffee chocolate, so that pretty much set the headcanon in stone, haha)
  • Murphy's height is 6 feet and 2 inches tall. This is mostly derived from jokes about how uncannily similar he and Henry Townshend are in appearance, and as the latter is the only Silent Hill protagonist with a confirmed height (185 cm, about 6'1"), Murphy's height followed suit, albeit made slightly taller than Henry by a single inch for comedic effect.
  • Despite what his rough appearance and standoffish demeanor imply, Murphy is actually quite the sweetheart... for the few that have earned his trust, though. He's a very guarded man, but when gradually building respect to friendly sentiment for someone, he opens up a little more revealing surprising things like his fondness for sweets and protectiveness for small things such as bluebirds. While he's a pragmatic man, he's not devoid of emotion, and is amused by interesting idiosyncrasies and trinkets to muse over even if he wouldn't own much himself.
  • Before Murphy changed his ways to settle down with his ex-wife, Murphy lived a life of crime, primarily of burglary and carjacking. Well before going into prison, he already had great experience with combating and torturing people, be it fighting rivaling criminals, or roughing them up to get information out from and/or make an example out of... one of such fights was how he got the scar on his cheek as well.
  • With the duality of his criminal life and being a caring father, Murphy enjoys working with his hands, ranging from work like his former occupation as a car mechanic, to hobbies and domesticities like DIY crafts and helping his family bake.
  • This isn't necessarily a headcanon due to the fact the canon of Murphy not "finishing the job" for both attacks was actually a writing mistake, but regardless, Murphy kills Napier and attempted to do the same to Frank; Sewell didn't do anything, keeping his hands clean while Murphy was the one doing dirty work staining his hands red.
    • Murphy has already experienced fights both in and out of prison, and thus is very much aware of how much a human can endure before ultimately dying... so even with rightfully brutalizing and murdering Napier, it was still the human life he took, which deeply affected Murphy with the weight of what he's done (especially given his religious upbringing).
  • While he was raised by nuns in a Catholic orphanage growing up, due to the grueling circumstances of his life, especially after the assault and murder of Charlie, Murphy has lost his faith. However, he still carries on strong sentiments and beliefs stemming from Catholicism, such as his judgemental nature of others and deep Catholic guilt shame believing himself to be a damned man deserving nothing but punishment.

AUs

  • Crosslocke (Crossover Nuzlocke): Sinnoh Hill
    • Murphy is a Gyarados in this AU, and his monstrous form fully transforms into a Mega Gyarados naga-esque body like Falin's chimera form from Dungeon Meshi. While everyone else has amnesia throughout their Full Circle timeloops when trapped in the town, Murphy in particular retains his memories, and had gone mad from the hopeless situation and accumulating power growing out of his control.
    • For better or for worse, after an attack attempting to kill ████ and the other survivors mistaking them for monsters, he's been reluctantly allied with out of both parties's aligned goals of breaking the Full Circle curse and escaping Silent Hill. He may also be saddled by unnecessary feelings by the trainer in particular too...
  • Tomodachi Life
    • Just a Tomodachi Life game save with the Silent Hill/Nuzlocke AU team where everyone's chilling out and having day-to-day misadventures. Murphy's one of many Miis living on Toluca Island, happily married to ████ (after many misadventures in of itself wooing her) and have a daughter named Trinh.
      • i was so fickle with baby names to the point tomm of all people chose her final name out of five i ""narrowed down"" to 💀... he's now a godfather who gave his "Lol, Congrats" congratulations to my cringe fanchild...

Selfship Lore

why the hell are you here

brief overview of who ████ is, namely her being a psychopomp that allegedly ended up in silent hill touring there when hearing certain advertisements like "getting away from it all"

they primarily meet in the nuzlocke au, but their meeting still works and plays along as is even as a "normal silent hill au" without the pokemon stuff LMAO, but basically, ████ encounters other survivors and cooperates w them as an impromptu trainer/leader, and murphy almost kills them all but is ultimately defeated and knocked out by her

uneasy alliance given his monstrous form and being a serial killer that tried to kill her and everyone else, but both parties acquiesce w ████ as the mediator between the team (know there's a cult with some kind of unfamiliar power to take down) vs murphy (knows the town is under a "full circle" timeloop phenomenon), cue ten million years of "will they won't they" "so close yet so far" pining of "he hates me, he wants to kill me :(" "i like her, i want to kiss her >:I..."

then reveal the full context of their situation, and why it's so important: they're both outcasts of society in different ways (a disenfranchised man who was forced to be a violent criminal due to his circumstances and how society/people's failure lead to the assault and murder of his son, and an "imperfect victim" on the run bc she was groomed under racist and misogynist societal pressures to be the "perfect daughter", ultimately leading to an outburst lashing out when her father attempted to assault and murder her), failed by many people both on an individual and societal level, so they take solace in one another; also, while externally different in personalities, they actually share a lot in common w bleeding hearts of both love and hate, extreme jadedness and cynicism on top of their capacity/willingness/experience of inflicting violence due to the circumstances they've been through

and maybe sprinkle in my real-world thoughts about loving him and what makes exploring his narrative + other narratives so interesting Especially w what they reflect w the real world (eg a vietnamese person perceived and mistreated as a woman and "not allowed" to be angry or violent bc of racism/misogyny while he, a white man, is "allowed" and expected of that, even while being seen as lesser because he's a criminal, the deconstruction of the racist/misogynist "vietnamese people are dehumanized and not acknowledged as individuals, they are only a prop and/or sex object for white men, who are all Good Patriot Toxic Masculine Soldiers" stereotype (for once, an asian person who isn't a man is actually respected and acknowledged as a human being in the narrative, and it's literally the whole point to hammer that in! she's an equal! who doesn't die! what groundbreaking revelations! + both of them being very nuanced people and if anything, ████ being the "more important" person in the dynamic murphy defers to)), etc, there's just a lot of ideas to explore and deconstruct...!
